In 206 BC, Roman general and politician Publio Cornelio Sipion built a settlement to help defeat veterans of the Carthaginians. Located on the banks of the Guadalkiville River in Seville, it is named "Italica" due to the Italian ancestry of its residents. It became the first Roman settlement on the Iberian Peninsula and played an important role in the romanization of the region. Italy flourished in the centuries following its founding, especially during the reigns of emperors Turajin and Hadrian.
