Waitangi Day, celebrated every 6 February in New Zealand, commemorates the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840, an agreement between the British Crown and more than 500 Maori chiefs. This day is celebrated with traditional dances, speeches, festivals and exciting waka (Maori canoe) races. The main ceremonies take place at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, a historic enclave that any visitor should visit to connect with the country’s history and culture.
