Today is the International Day of the Zebra. This special day is meant to honor these eye-catching animals, known for their unique black and white patterns, while raising our awareness of their plight. While the steppe zebras seen in today's image in Mokala National Park in South Africa are found in large numbers, the mountain zebras are threatened by poaching and the loss of their habitat. Zebras live mainly in the savannahs of Africa. Of the three zebra species – Grevyzebra, steppe zebra and mountain zebra – the Grevyzebra is the most endangered, with more than half of its population lost in just three decades.
