In today's image, a medieval tower can be seen standing over the small town of San Gimignano near Siena, Italy. In the Middle Ages, San Gimignano grew up around a church dedicated to San Gallian and became a popular stop for pilgrims heading to Rome. The reason why this city is prosperous is due to the local trade in wine and saffron. However, the devastating Black Death of 1348 reduced the population by half, slowed development, and maintained its century long characteristics until today.
