Today’s picture takes us to the spectacular Venetian lagoon in Italy. The lagoon stretches over 550 square kilometers and is a rich mosaic of islands, slides, canals and swamps. It is one of the largest wetlands in the Mediterranean and is full of history and innovation. After the last ice age, it was built around 476 AD. A refuge for people fleeing invasions. These early settlers began building the iconic city of Venice.
