Imagine a colossal puzzle of more than two million blocks of stone: that is Borobudur. Built in the 9th century under the Shailendra dynasty, it is the largest Buddhist temple in the world and is located on the island of Java, Indonesia. This sanctuary has withstood centuries of volcanic eruptions and earthquakes thanks to its advanced system of intertwined stones. Although abandoned for centuries, it was rediscovered in the 19th century by Thomas Stamford Raffles.
