(The time is ripe!)

Today's picture shows a field of ripe pumpkins in Victoria in the Canadian province of British Columbia. Pumpkins are inextricably linked to the Halloween tradition of face carving, which originated in Ireland. Originally, people carved beets to keep evil spirits away and made scary faces for it. When Irish immigrants came to America, they discovered that pumpkins are much larger and easier to work with. This discovery led to the popular tradition of pumpkin carving, which spread quickly in the USA and eventually around the world.
