Today we celebrate the International Day of the Sloth! The main actor of our picture today is the thirteen-toed sloth, pictured here on a tree in Costa Rica. This relaxed, tree-loving mammal is home to the tropical regions of South and Central America. These fascinating animals have short tails and three toe claws on each limb that allow them to easily hold onto branches. Sloths feed mainly on leaves, but also eat fruits and tree juices. In order to be able to crush the tough, fibrous leaves, they have a special multi-chamber stomach. Their metabolism is very slow, which means that digestion takes a very long time and they do not need much food per day to survive.
