The Alfanzina Lighthouse in Carvoeiro on Portugal's sun-drenched southern coast is more than just a maritime landmark – it is a shining messenger of history, built in 1919. With the beginning of the International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend, this imposing lighthouse invites you to deepen the historical connection between man and sea. Lighthouses that were once lit with fires and oil lamps and whose guards were awake day and night are now largely automated and equipped with electric light. Lightships served as signposts in waters that made it impossible to build a lighthouse.
