Today, the long-awaited Summer Olympics will open in the City of Lights in Paris, France. The opening ceremony is spectacular, with a grand opening ceremony where participants will embark on a fleet sailing on the impressive Seine River instead of parading through the stadium, and thousands of spectators will line up on both sides to cheer. Paris is not unfamiliar with the first news in history: at the 1900 Olympics, women participated in the competition for the first time, although only 22 out of 997 athletes were women.
