Today is Earth Day, a day to celebrate the planet we call home. The seeds of this day were planted in 1969, when Gerald Nelson witnessed events such as the Cuyahoga River fire and the Santa Barbara oil spill, and decided that the world needed an environmental initiative. One year later, the first day of Earth was celebrated. Now, it has become an annual event attended by more than 193 countries.
