The windiest, coldest, driest and fifth largest continent on earth, Antarctica, was discovered only 1820. In the following decades, various countries organized expeditions to reach and explore the Antarctic ice sheets. Since there were no indigenous people on the southernmost continent, various nations claimed the area. As tensions increased, 12-states signed the Antarctic Treaty on 1.12.1959 to free the region for scientific research and ban military activities. Today we are celebrating the anniversary of this Treaty, to which 56 States now belong.
