Before you reach the beach, you will hear it: the whisper of the leaves moved by the salty breeze, the crunching of twisted trunks and the silence of an ancient world. Welcome to Cumberland Island Marine Forest, on the Atlantic coast of Georgia, United States, one of the last of its kind in the country. Living oaks bend with hurricane winds, but do not break. In its shadow grow dwarf palms as if they were green guardians, and from the branch hangs Spanish moss, so called because it reminds of the beards of the conquerors. This detail connects, curiously, with the history of Spain in America.
