In Lake Tyrrell, south of Australia, the sky meets the Earth in a dazzling deployment. The largest salt lake in the state of Victoria was formed about 120,000 years ago. Over time, climate change caused water levels to drop; Today, the lake is usually dry, except in winter when it is covered by about 5 centimeters of water. With an area of more than 180 square kilometres, Lake Tyrrell is a haven for wildlife, including Mallee reptiles, kangaroos and emus.
