Bamburgh Castle sits atop a black volcanic rock in Northumberland, England. The castle and surrounding beaches are covered with the area's typical sandy landscape, the Bamburgh Dunes, which can be seen in the foreground of today's picture. It was once a strategic Anglo-Saxon fortress that developed over the centuries into the imposing structure it is today. In 993 it was destroyed by the Vikings and rebuilt after the conquest of England in 1066 by the Normans. Bamburgh Castle is a testament to the history of England and the ability of the people to rebuild and start anew even after war and destruction. Today, the castle is known to many as the backdrop for famous films such as "Ivanhoe", "Macbeth" and "Transformers: The Last Knight".
