Lake Braies in Alta Pusteria in Italy is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites and today one of the most visited lakes in South Tyrol, even though there are practically no tourist infrastructures there apart from the still existing historic hotel, a boathouse and some hiking trails. The lake was created a long time ago by a mud avalanche exit and is located at almost 1,500 meters high in the beautiful Braies Valley. The lake plays an important role in the legends, because it is said that you could reach the underground kingdom of the Fanes by boat. The now buried gateway to the underworld is said to have been located at the southern end of the lake towards Seekofel, which is why it is called "Sass dla Porta" (Torberg) in Ladin. Among other things, the lake was the location of the Italian hit series "The Mountain Police" with Terence Hill. The series attracted numerous Italian day tourists to the lake.
