One of Mexico's most spectacular natural phenomena can be observed every year in the forested mountains west of Mexico City. Between mid-January and the end of March, huge colonies of monarch butterflies from the colder regions of the north migrate here to begin the mating season in the warmth of Mexico. The vast colonies can contain up to 20 million specimens. Monarch butterflies make use of air currents during their migration, with the help of which they can travel up to 50 kilometers a day.
