Rügen, Germany's largest island, is also a winter wonderland. The picturesque landscape is covered in a light blanket of snow, creating a winter wonderland. If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, Rügen is the ideal retreat. Many artists have come here in the past to give free rein to their creativity. The imposing chalk cliffs inspired one of the most famous German painters in history.
The Sassnitz Lighthouse is the witness and guardian of this winter idyll. Built in the 19th century, it stands tall on the island to help sailors navigate safely in rough seas, fog, rain and other adverse weather conditions. Don't you think there's something romantic about lighthouses? They stand there majestically, knowing centuries-old secrets of the seas, and although they are lifeless structures, they are friends and guardians of mankind.
Do you know anything about philately? If you collect stamps, you may know what we are talking about. If not, here's a little-known fact. This lighthouse first appeared on a GDR stamp on 13 May 1975. It's not the only one. Do you know the others?
