Halloween is here! While you're out and about tonight there's a good chance that you might see a gourd all aglow. The origin of Pumpkin carving is also rooted in Ireland. Initially, this Halloween activity of carving scary faces and intricate designs was done using turnips and potatoes. When Irish immigrants arrived in North America, they discovered that pumpkins were available in large quantities and, were also easier to carve than other vegetables. The term 'jack-o'-lantern' is rooted in Irish folklore, referring to Stingy Jack, a mythical character and trickster who carried an ember inside a hollowed-out turnip.
