Dragon boat racing and eating rice dumplings are the most famous customs of the Dragon Boat Festival. They are also the oldest folk activities. Dragon boat rowing, also known as dragon boat racing, has a history of more than 1,500 years in China. It has been listed as a national intangible cultural heritage. Dragon boat racing was originally a form of sacrificial activity for the Wuyue tribes in the Jiangsu and Zhejiang regions. It was used to worship the dragon ancestors. The ancient Baiyue people used dragons as totems to show that they were "dragon sons". Rice dumplings and boat races are both associated with the dragon. Every year, on the day of the Dragon Boat Festival, a grand totem festival is held. One of the activities is to build a canoe in the shape of a dragon to the sound of drums and race on the water to attract the totem god. This is the origin of the custom of dragon boat racing.
